Kidney Health Check
Your GFR (Glomerular Filtration Rate) is the best test to measure your level of kidney function and determine your stage of kidney disease.
Why This Tool is Accurate:
- 2021 Standard: We use the latest "Race-Free" CKD-EPI equation recommended by the National Kidney Foundation.
- Staging Logic: Instantly identifies if you are in Stage 1 (Normal) or Stages 2-5 (CKD).
- Unit Conversion: Supports both standard (mg/dL) and international (μmol/L) creatinine units.
What is GFR (Glomerular Filtration Rate)?
GFR stands for Glomerular Filtration Rate. It is a calculation that estimates how well your kidneys are filtering waste from your blood.
Think of GFR as the "speedometer" of your kidneys. A GFR of 100 means your kidneys are working at 100% capacity. As kidney function declines, the GFR number drops. It is the gold standard for diagnosing and staging Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).
Understanding Your Results: The 5 Stages of CKD
Based on your calculated eGFR, kidney function is categorized into 5 stages.
| Stage | eGFR Range | Kidney Status |
|---|---|---|
| Stage 1 | 90+ | Normal or high function (if no other damage). |
| Stage 2 | 60 - 89 | Mildly decreased function. |
| Stage 3a/3b | 30 - 59 | Mild to moderately decreased function. |
| Stage 4 | 15 - 29 | Severely decreased function. |
| Stage 5 | < 15 | Kidney Failure (End Stage Renal Disease). |
* Note: A diagnosis of CKD usually requires GFR to remain low for at least 3 months.
What Affects Your Creatinine Levels?
This calculator relies on Serum Creatinine, a waste product from muscle wear and tear. However, creatinine isn't perfect. It can be influenced by factors other than kidney health:
Muscle Mass
Bodybuilders or people with high muscle mass naturally have higher creatinine (lowering eGFR artificially). Conversely, elderly people with low muscle mass may have deceptively low creatinine.
Diet & Hydration
Eating a large cooked meat meal prior to testing can temporarily spike creatinine. Severe dehydration can also affect the results.
Important Medical Limitations
Not a Diagnosis: This eGFR calculation is an estimate. It assumes average muscle mass and stable health. It should not be used to dose medications or diagnose kidney disease without professional interpretation.
Acute vs. Chronic: This tool is designed for Chronic Kidney Disease (stable state). It is NOT accurate for Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) where kidney function changes rapidly (e.g., hospitalized patients).
